You are warmly invited to our upcoming solo exhibition from Małgorzata Dawidek, 'Palimpsests', opening at blackShed Gallery on Saturday 10th October, 2:00pm - 4:00pm.
This exhibition has resulted from a long period of research and a residency at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, following Małgorzata winning the 2022 Hastings Open Grand Prize, with the piece '(Self)Soothing Project #3'.
We have been working with Małgorzata ever since, towards this exciting, original and sensitive exhibition, tracing and reconstructing the natural / cultural landscapes that shaped the life and work of Marie de France, Britain's first known female writer.
For 'Palimpsests', resulting from a residency at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, the artist has created a photographic and drawing-based series that reconstructs the natural-cultural landscapes of the 12th & 13th centuries England's southern coast - places that shaped simultaneously by natural processes and by human presence, memory, history and imagination.
Moving away from traditional ways of illustrating stories, Dawidek focuses on documenting the realities of Dame Marie's period: both those described by the poet in Lais and Fables, and those preserved in material culture. In the course of her research, she collaborated with curators of medieval collections, studying artefacts held by Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, Bexhill Museum and Winchelsea Court Hall Museum.
