Things to do around Pevensey

Pevensey Castle’s long history starts with the Romans, who built a shore fort here in the 4th century to ward off the Saxons. Centuries later, William the Conqueror built upon the old Roman walls, turning the ruined fort into a castle. It has seen a lot of action over the centuries, most recently as a World War II lookout for German aircraft. Today the site is run by English Heritage and visitors can soak up its history hands-on with plenty of displays and information.

The village sits on a ridge jutting out onto marshland, which until the 13th century was an inlet of the sea. Over time shingle cut the bay off from the sea, forming the large nature reserve now known as Pevensey Levels. Leading up to the castle entrance, on either side the village is a mix of weatherboard and stone cottages, antique shops, traditional pubs and cafes.

The Court House Museum in the High Street dates to the 1700s and was used as the town hall and jail until 1886. Complete with original dock, cells and exercise yard, the museum is also packed with artefacts and information on the local history. Uncover Pevensey’s smuggling secrets, including a violent clash between smugglers and customs men in 1833.

Between April and September, visit the fully restored Stone Cross Windmill, open Sundays and bank holidays. Visit the tea room and enjoy a slice of cake baked with flour milled on site, or buy a bag to take home.

Pevensey Bay is well known today to sailing enthusiasts, with the local sailing club offering a variety of boats and a full programme of racing. The inspiring 31-mile 1066 Country Walk starts at Pevensey Castle, winding its way to Herstmonceux, Battle and across the countryside to Rye.

A little further afield you'll find the beautiful Michelham Priory, home to England's longest medieval water-filled moat. And if you're visiting as a family, children will love a trip to the Drusillas or Knockhatch adventure parks, or the Observatory Science Centre in Herstmonceux.
