Until the 1970s, this rolling countryside was home to the Guinness Hop Farm. Every summer around 4,000 hop pickers – mainly women, children and elderly relatives from the East End of London – would arrive by steam train to stay for several weeks in the fresh countryside air. Each September the village remembers its hop-picking heritage with a Hop Festival Weekend, packed with music, dancing, real ale, a recreated hop garden and hopper’s hut, hop-picking activities and train rides.
