Step into 800 years of history at Michelham Priory House & Gardens, one of Sussex’s most fascinating heritage attractions.
Founded by Augustinian canons in 1229, Michelham Priory has witnessed centuries of change, from the upheaval of the Tudor Reformation to its role as a refuge for evacuees and a base for the Canadian Army during the Second World War.
Discover beautifully furnished historic interiors, with rooms reflecting different periods of the Priory’s rich past. Highlights include the historic kitchen, the World War Two evacuees’ bedroom, and displays of fascinating artefacts and furniture. Younger visitors can enjoy hands-on activities and opportunities to dress up in period costumes.
Outside, explore seven acres of picturesque grounds featuring the magnificent Elizabethan Great Barn, a medieval gatehouse, and a collection of themed gardens, including the kitchen, physic and medieval herb gardens. Stroll around the water-filled moat, spot resident wildlife, discover sculptures throughout the grounds, and enjoy the children's play area.
The on-site Blue Door Café serves delicious seasonal food and refreshments, with no admission ticket required to visit.
On Sundays, visitors can also meet the resident archery groups, The Michelham Bowmen and Wolfshead Bowmen. These knowledgeable reenactors are always happy to share their passion for traditional archery and historic crafts. For a small donation, visitors can even try their hand at archery on the South Lawn (weather permitting).
With historic buildings, beautiful gardens, family-friendly activities and plenty to explore throughout the year, Michelham Priory House & Gardens offers a memorable day out for all ages.
