St Mary’s is one of 300 Major Churches within the Church of England, recognised for its historical importance and significance.
Founded in 1115 to serve the community that grew around the Abbey, it remains a thriving hub in Battle and is home to rare medieval wall paintings depicting St Margaret of Antioch (c.1300), Crusaders’ crosses carved into pillars, and the Battle Tapestry.
Grade I listed, it also contains the Senlac Window, depicting William the Conqueror and Harold Godwinson, and the ornate tomb of Sir Anthony Browne, King Henry VIII’s Master of the Horse.
