Journeys Festival of Dance takes place at The Stade in Hastings (Saturday) and at the De La Warr Pavilion Terrace (Sunday) last weekend in September. It is free and participatory and mainstreams diversity throughout the event.
Sunday:
Why? by Gravity and Levity is both a tender and exhilarating aerial duet exploring themes of life, loss, surrender and acceptance in a soft and moving way.
The piece offers a visceral experience for its audiences that not only legitimises the emotional one but creates space for the viewer to bring their own understanding to it, triggering a resonance, not dictating their experience.
Performed in two parts, 'Why?' uses climbing harnesses and abseil lines to dance on a bespoke free-standing wall – 'vertical dance'.
A Place In Between by Yumino Seki - Yumino Seki is a U.K based independent dance artist, Butoh practitioner, performer, teacher and qualified somatic movement educator & therapist. She was born in Japan and has trained in both classical and contemporary dance.
Her work is influenced by Butoh. Collaborating with artists from diverse disciplines has given her a broad approach to her dance practice. She has been interested in the authenticity of the temporal body for many years resulting in many pieces, which are site responsive and improvised in nature. Seki's work crosses the boundaries of dance, performance art and installation. Since 1999 she has trained and worked in Butoh predominantly with Tadashi Endo (Mamu Dance Theatre), Yumiko Yoshioka (TEN PEN CHii) both in Germany and Carlotta Ikeda (Ariadone) in France.
