Add Vindication Swim + Q&A to your Itinerary

Picture shows a wooden rowing boat following a woman swimming in the sea as she swims the English Channel.

About

The inspirational true story of Mercedes Gleitze, famous for being the first British woman to swim the English Channel in 1927, and for the hoax that sullied her claim resulting in the 'vindication swim' that gives the film its title.

As a working-class, unmarried typist, Gleitze self-funded all of her swims, conquering the Channel after eight attempts. Not only did she mark her place as a pioneer in the swimming world, but also fought tirelessly for women's rights and better working conditions in factories.

Every penny of her prize money went into establishing a charity for the homeless, a cause that remains active today. Her extraordinary accomplishments deserve to be etched in the memories and celebrations of women and athletes alike.

We are delighted that writer/director Elliot Hasler and Kirsten Callaghan (debut who plays Mercedes Gleitze) will join us for a Q&A after the film, which was mostly filmed in Sussex, including in Rye and Hastings.
