Red Door are delighted to welcome back Clare Summons and Maggie Brand.
Clare and Maggie are two ex-teachers embarking on an exciting journey of creativity. Their love of colour and pattern is expressed in this exhibition. The soft flowing textiles sit well amid the rich expressive mediums of fused and stained glass inspired by nature and the sea, displaying a mesmerising combination of colour and pattern. Textiles include printed chiffon scarfs and wearable accessories, as well as upcycled sarees as loungewear and clothing.
Clare Summons
My journey of creativity has been through many changes since completing my degree in Three Dimensional Design at WSCAD, where I studied casting. Liquid to solid, positive and negative shapes exploring forms. Using a variety of casting clays and inlaying colour and pattern within the functional pieces. Creativity through teaching became my world until I discovered fused glass. Fused Glass turned my world upside down. The dream of my studio at the bottom of my garden became reality. My passion learning found new channels and my personal fire was re-lit. I see the world through colour and pattern, using drawing, collage and photography as the vehicles to help visualise my concepts and ideas for my glass. My work uses a range of techniques, which bring out the texture and the colour of the glass. I am drawn to the nature of the heat and all that changes within the kiln. The use of plaster and how this can add to the surface and depth of the piece intrigues my creative thoughts.

From Designer/Developer in the clothing industry to Teacher of Textiles up to A Level, and now Textiles Whiz. I work with a myriad of fabrics on an eclectic mix of projects from domestic to majestic. My Textiles art concentrates on bold florals and striking patterns. I am inspired by nature, florals, bright colours and fabulous fabrics. Growing up in Glasgow and spending time at Glasgow School of Art means part of me is pure Rennie Mackintosh spilling over into Art Nouveau and Deco. In this exhibition there will be bold printed chiffon in the form of accessories, fun, upcycled garments and some craft items.
