Wunderkammer brings together objects from the depths of our stores. The exhibition includes marvellous natural history specimens, ancient archaeological artefacts, local and social history objects and works of fine and decorative arts; the majority of the objects on display will not have been shown for many years.
The exhibition takes its name from the German for 'cabinet of curiosities'. These were an early type of museum developed during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries by wealthy merchants and nobles. These early museums combined displays of natural history, art and antiquities in an attempt to categorise and tell stories about the marvels of the natural world.
In our Wunderkammer, the art gallery will be transformed into an evolving display and work area as objects are cleaned, documented and then returned to the stores. You will see in real time how we care for the collections and the work that is required to ensure the continued preservation of these marvellous collections for generations to come.
