The Art of Tatreez - Palestinian Embroidery Workshop for All

This event is part of the Palestine on the Pier Festival.

 

A two hour workshop at The Nest for those with an interest in learning the craft of Tatreez from Palestinian artist Miranda Allan.

Miranda spent the first 24 years of her life as a refugee in a Jordan refugee camp before coming to this country.

She is an educator, a fine artist, photographer and expert in the art of Tatreez embroidery.

Tatreez was recently added to the UNESCO list of protected cultural heritage.

It has been passed down through the generations and forms an important part of the connection between the Palestinian people and the public sphere, each 'thoub' embroidered with designs that link it to the place and people, thus forming an important aspect of cultural identity.

Says Miranda: 'Palestinian embroidery is an art, not just a thread, a needle, a cross stitch, and a handcraft. It is the art of skills that shape life. When a Palestinian woman embroiders on her dress and decorates the furniture of her home it is with the story of her life and the history of her homeland – Palestine.'

The Beginners workshop is for those who have little or no experience with needlework and would like to learn the basic cross-stitch design of tatreez.

For this workshop a small 'starter pack' is included: square of aida fabric + a needle + cotton threads(optional colours).

Extras will be charge privately ( e.g. extra pack , aida fabric, etc).

The workshop is part of the Palestine on the Pier festival on 4 September between 12noon-6pm.
