The nineteenth century was a period of multiple changes affecting all avenues of society from the industrial revolution to art and scientific invention. Not least of these was Geology – a relatively new science.
Hastings Museum & Art Gallery in collaboration with Theatre Rotto supported by the Geologists' Association is presenting four events in November '26 exploring the relationship between Gideon and Mary Ann Mantell and the Geologist Charles Lyell. The Mantell's of Lewes discovered the first iguanodon in Sussex, only the second dinosaur to be formally identified and collaborated with Charles Lyell, who is widely considered to be the father of Geology.
The three workshop events are fully participatory for adults, young people and children and encompass illustration, puppet making and performance to bring elements of deep time vividly to life. Two workshops are preceded by a talk from palaeontologist Philip Hadland (who found footprints of the last dinosaurs to roam the UK) with specimens from the museum and Keith Leech Geologist.
The first event of the scheme is the performance "MR MANTELL'S TOOTH" on November 1st. This show is described as "Inspiring" "Superb "as well as informative. It sets the tone for the events and reveals the story of the prehistoric revelations as the older MaryAnn Mantell looks back, while engaging puppets and a huge dinosaur emerge to tell the tale.
