Stabat Mater Pergolesi
Stabat Mater A Scarlatti

Alessandro Scarlatti's Stabat Mater was composed in 1724 at the behest of the Knights of the Virgin of Sorrows (Cavalieri della Virgine dei Dolori) in Naples. The work was well received, and was played every year during the Lenten Season until about 1734, when the same order commissioned a new Stabat Mater from Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.
Pergolesi's work received even greater acclaim, and it is Pergolesi's work that is performed much more frequently today.
