EXPERIMENTS IN CARE-FUL LISTENING

About

What modes of attention might be required if we are to notice the discreet, the non-verbal or the invisible? How can we develop a sense of care in relation to listening and a listening with a sense of care? How do we hear words beyond speech?

This workshop will explore such questions through individual and collective listening to each other and other sounds. We will develop practice-based methods of sensory observation and will engage in personal reflection, sharing positive stories in which non-verbal communication has been effectively deployed.

In this way we will work towards a collaborative protocol for a Care-ful Listening:

We will meet at the box office and take our inspiration for the workshop from a directed, collective listening to Mikhail Karikis' work I Hear You, installed in the First floor gallery.

We will then take this experience into the Studio to practice and discuss the idea of such a care-ful listening; working through listening exercises, sound making, text scores and note taking.

From here we will work in pairs and groups to develop listening protocols, guidelines and imaginations of listening, that help us to tune in and take care to hear the inaudible: that which does not fit within expectations of language and recognisable sounds.

led by Salomé Voegelin and Mark Peter Wright, as part of Points of Listening: an ongoing project of collective listening and sound making situated at the intersection of sound arts, participatory practices and education,
