Coastal Currents Arts Festival: The Light and Shadow Salon

About

Curated in partnership with Chiara Ambrosia

A night of film, song, music, image and spoken word that explores the role of the artist in shaping the city and keeping the embers alive.

"They tried to bury us: they didn't know that we were seed" Mexican proverb

The Light & Shadow Salon has been running as a monthly gathering at the Horse Hospital in London since 2008. A place for artists, writers and audience to meet and share ideas about the past, present and future of the moving image in all its forms, the Salon is a place for exchange, interaction and cross-pollination, welcoming active contributions and interventions from all its participants.

Building the Raft is a night that explores the role of the artist as witness and catalyst: how, by engaging with the world through the body (or the lens of a camera) and the voice, one can transform it, providing alternative narratives of place.

It also looks at the political role of the imagination in shaping a document of our times informed by questions such as: how
does physical occupation shape the city? How does the changing shape of the city affect local culture? How can representation and the imagination contribute to this discourse?

This event proposes to engage in an ongoing conversation about local identity and forms of culture, and their role in promoting
community in times of great change and division: storytelling as a cathartic, collective act of communion.
