Kent & East Sussex Railway

About

From 22 May will be three socially distanced seating steam hauled departures every day that the line is open, leaving Tenterden at 10.40, 13.15 and 15.35, for the two-hour round trip to Bodiam. If the restrictions continue to be eased, additional services will be introduced from June and passengers will once again be able to break their journey to enjoy visitor attractions in East Sussex.

For the safety of visitors, social distancing restrictions remain in place for reopening. Tickets are being sold online for family groups and exclusive private compartments. Online prices are £36 for a table for two £49 for a table for up to 4 travelling together and a private compartment for 8 is £85. Bookings can be made via the railway’s website kesr.org.uk/reopening

__

As the Kent and East Sussex Railway (KESR) celebrates its 60th anniversary, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the history and heritage of the railway, which was lovingly preserved for the benefit of future generations, in 1961. New for this year, there will be a series of on-board activities, which highlight the diverse wildlife which can be seen from the train. As a non-pedestrian corridor through the Weald and Rother valley, there is an enormous variety of mammals, butterflies, water birds, birds of prey and much more for passengers to spot from the comfort of their carriages and a chance to learn more about the unique natural habitat of the railway.

For families visiting a free activity sheet is available for all children and a selection of lunch options can be preordered to collect and enjoy during the 50 minute journey from Tenterden to Bodiam. Free parking is available for customers at Tenterden Town Station.

Everyone can enjoy a fun step back in time at Tenterden’s Steam Railway.  Why not take a journey behind one of the railway’s delightful steam or diesel engines and travel through ten and a half miles of idyllic countryside from Tenterden to Bodiam.  The railway is in close proximity by road to a number of excellent attractions including famous gardens, historic houses and vineyards.

All facilities have been carefully designed with disabled, elderly and less mobile visitors in mind.  For pre-booked groups coach parking is available at Tenterden Town Station.

On train catering can be booked in advance:   Tea or Coffee with a fresh Pastry £4.00 Cream Tea:  £6.95  Ploughman’s Lunch: £7.95 (dessert for an additional £3.50)

A great trip with such friendly and welcoming staff, marred by virtually no one in our carriage (or any other, as far as I could see) wearing a face mask. I’m pregnant and booked this feeling... Read full review

We had a private compartment, which was well worth the extra money. A step back in time, and a gentle trip through the country side. It's a shame we couldn't visit Bodium castle, but the views of it... Read full review
