Statue of Liberty is an avant-garde big band, based in Hastings - the UK's newest 'Music City.' It's a monument in sound, built to welcome those crossing the Channel. Players include seasoned professionals alongside emerging musicians, among them performers from East Sussex migrant and refugee communities. The 21-piece group features draws on a vast array of local talent and brings together players who might not usually share the same stage. It aims for something new but still accessible. Statue of Liberty's repertoire is anything but predictable, with cover versions of works by American free-jazz pioneer Sun Ra; Renaissance composer John Dowland; and even library music from BBC kids' show Vision On!
The Copper Family have been singing in East Sussex since the 17th century. They are the globally acknowledged custodians of English traditional music. The family maintain an oral tradition brought into sharp focus by the late Bob Copper, a song collector and archivist whose influence has been felt throughout the UK's folk music scenes for nearly a hundred years. Murder, mad love, the field and the sea, the comings and goings of the seasons and the work they entail: these are the themes of a tradition audibly tied to the land - and which has become an integral part of the local landscape.
