American archaeology really began with the explorations of John Lloyd Stevens and Frederick Catherwood. Between 1839 and 1843 they uncovered many archaeological sites in central America. The Mayan ruins they found were the remains of a civilisation that had been lost in the rain forests for over four hundred years.
