FRUIT art exhibition by Jamie Atherton

25 London Road, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, TN37 6AJ
painting by Jamie Atherton shows clothed man on sofa.

About

25 London Road presents FRUIT, a solo exhibition of ink drawings, an in-situ mural and ceramic sculptures by artist Jamie Atherton. As the double-entendre title suggests, Atherton is attentive to representations of nature and sexuality — discovering momentary connections between, for instance, Old Master paintings and young master/older slave fetish videos. These provocations belie a tenderness: a search for open perception and authentic encounters.

The title of the exhibition refers to the role of fruit in still life and vanitas painting, where it can represent both worldliness and opulence, or, where decay is evident, the fleeting transience of mortal life. Simultaneously, FRUIT references a term for gay men that is both a pejorative and coded slang used in the underground gay cant language of Polari.
