Brick-vaulted underground rooms of the buried Swan Hotel Coach House in Hastings, with stone pillars and cobbled floors.

About

For more than 200 years, The Swan Hotel in Hastings was one of the most important buildings on the South Coast. It hosted everything from banquets for the Lord Mayor of London to performances of ventriloquism and séances. When the hotel was demolished in 1890, its coach house was buried almost completely intact. Today, it can only be reached through a trap door inside a private house.

Forgotten for many years and sealed behind brick walls, the current owners of the coach house removed tons of earth to reveal the original cobbled floor and tracks once used by coach wheels. The building is a rare and remarkable survivor.

Every Sunday throughout May, visitors will have the chance to explore the coach house by descending a set of wooden steps. The owners will share how they restored the building, researched its history, and uncovered many fascinating stories.
