Join professional hand embroidery artist and tutor Amy Burt for this one - day workshop introducing you to the fabulous and historical Jacobean crewelwork technique.
Taught in the stunning setting of Herstmonceux Castle, this is the perfect traditional hand embroidery experience. About Jacobean Crewelwork Jacobean crewelwork is a rich and decorative embroidery style that flourished in England during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Characterised by flowing, naturalistic designs of flowers, vines, bird s, and mythical creatures, this technique uses wool thread on linen fabric to create beautifully textured pieces.
Interestingly, the stitches used in crewelwork are very similar to those employed in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, connecting you to centuries of embroidery tradition.
Over the course of the day, you will work on one of Amy's Lady B Embroidery kits, inspired by a Jacobean bed hanging in the V&A collection featuring a whimsical stork. In your kit, you will receive everything you need to start the design.
Amy will guide you through stitches such as trellis, satin stitch, heavy chain, and woven wheels, as well as core stitches including split stitch, chain, and French knots.
Worked on traditional crewelwork fabric linen twill, you will use the gorgeous naturally dyed crewel wool 'Eco Vita' by DMC in a range of beautiful shades. Your kit also includes instructions, a hoop, and needles.
Amy will guide you through each step with detailed live demonstrations, ensuring you feel confident and inspired throughout the day. This workshop is suitable for total beginners and above!
