About

The West Hill Lift, first opened in 1891, retains its original wooden Victorian coaches. It runs through a tunnel, very unusual for a funicular railway!

The lift's charming lower station is in traffic-free George Street which is full of independent cafés, art shops and bookshops.

The West Hill itself offers some of the town's most remarkable views, stretching round to Beachy Head in the west and out across the English Channel. You'll also find Hastings Castle (please check opening times).

Unfortunately, the West Hill Lift is not wheelchair accessible as there is no step-free access. There is limited access on the carriages for push chairs.

The East Hill Lift has ramp access.
