Baroness Fookes, the patron of The Friends of Conquest Hospital charity, and Sally-Ann Hart MP, will hold a lively discussion about the role of women in politics through the years at an event in aid of The Friends of Conquest Hospital and Hastings International Piano charities. The event will be held on Friday 20th October at 7:30 at the Crown House, St Leonard's on Sea. Tickets are £20 and are available for purchase via EventBrite.
The event will include discussion on the political climate for women in the 1970s, with a focus on the limited representation of women in politics, societal expectations and legal barriers. Baroness Fookes became a Member of Parliament in 1970, and so her experiences will be of particular interest.
In fact, the clip link below of an interview with Baroness Fookes back in 1970 is enough to make one's hair curl – it is excruciating to watch and a prime example of the challenges faced by women in politics in the 1970's and beyond.

The discussion could also include the Women's Suffrage movement and the impact of this, the progress of representation of women in political office, including challenges still faced and the importance of diverse representation.
A significant part of the discussion might focus on the persistent barriers and challenges women continue to face in politics, including sexism, gender bias, and harassment. They may highlight specific policies and initiatives that have aimed to support women's political involvement, such as gender quotas, women's caucuses, or gender-sensitive policies.
They might emphasize the intersectionality of gender with other factors, such as race, class, and sexuality, and discuss how this has shaped the experiences of women in politics. It's likely they'll mention successful women politicians who have broken barriers and made significant contributions to politics in their respective countries. They may provide a global perspective, comparing the situation in the UK with the experiences of women in other parts of the world.
The discussion could conclude with thoughts on the road ahead, including the challenges that still need to be addressed and opportunities for further progress in women's political participation.
