Grey Owl Cabin

Nestled in its own half acre of broadleaf woodland, Grey Owl Cabin allows guests to holiday in complete privacy, providing the chance to relax in a peaceful natural environment. The cabin has a comfortable ‘home from home’ feel and is fully equipped with everything you need for the perfect break away.

Whether you enjoy watching the local wildlife or exploring the secrets of the woodland, Grey Owl Cabin has much to offer. During the day the trees are visited by a multitude of songbirds and at night you’ll hear the tawny owls communicating to one another overhead. In spring the woodland is bright with bluebells and wood anemones and summer brings an array of foxgloves and red campion. The autumn sees the trees aglow with reds and oranges whilst in the winter, the cabin is warm and cosy, inviting you to curl up with a book or encouraging your creative talents to come to the fore.

For keen walkers, there is easy access to many local footpaths and rights of way which take you across to the village of Guestling, the breath-taking views of the English Channel at Fairlight and the beautiful long sandy beaches at Pett Level.

A railway station at Three Oaks runs directly into Hastings or Rye where there are many interesting attractions and historical landmarks to visit. Fairlight Hall, Great Dixter gardens and the Hastings Funicular Railways (East and West) are all within a 20-minute car ride from the cabin. During the year Hastings has a number of popular events which give visitors a flavour of local life, such as the ‘Jack in the Green’ festival on the May spring bank holiday and Pirate Day in July. If you’re planning trips further afield, London and Brighton are very accessible by rail or road, as are Gatwick airport and the Eurostar from Ashford International railway station.

For those seeking a more energetic break, there are many local sporting facilities nearby e.g. horse riding and golf. Equipment such as bikes and canoes can be stored on site in a lockable shed to keep them secure and dry.

Our ethos is very much about respecting and enjoying nature. The cabin pays tribute to Hastings-born Archibald Stansfield Belaney who was one of the first environmental campaigners in the 1930s and 40s. You can find out more about him at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, which has a dedicated exhibition. He adopted the Native American culture as his own after emigrating to Canada and took the name ‘Grey Owl’. He later travelled the world to spread his message on conservation and encouraged mankind to respect all flora and fauna. During his tours he visited Buckingham Palace and inspired a generation to care about the natural world, including the young David Attenborough who, with his brother Richard, attended a lecture by Grey Owl in the 1930s. Richard Attenborough went on to make a film about Grey Owl’s life. David Attenborough is probably the most famous conservationist known across the planet today.

In the words of Grey Owl ‘Remember. You belong to Nature, not it to you.’
