1066 Country: England’s Norman heartland is getting ready for its moment in the spotlight.
1066 Country has always been synonymous with one of history's most pivotal moments. In 1066, William the Conqueror’s victory reshaped England forever, launching the Norman era that echoes through our castles, abbeys, and landscapes today. From Pevensey Bay to Battle Abbey, from Hastings Castle to the port of Rye and the sweeping South Downs that witnessed it all, our region is a living tapestry of Norman heritage.
Now, we're on the cusp of two transformative years that will thrust 1066 Country into the global spotlight:
September 2026: Bayeux Tapestry arrives at the British Museum. This priceless 70-metre embroidery, chronicling the events of the Norman Conquest, will draw millions to London. Bayeux's story is our story: it immortalises the very events that defined Sussex as the cradle of Norman England. We want to encourage visitors to discover the place where it all happened.
Millenium ’27, European Year of the Normans. Marking 1,000 years since the Normans reshaped Europe, this Europe-wide celebration will position 1066 Country as a must-visit hub for history lovers, families, and cultural explorers.
Kickstarting the excitement is English Heritage’s reenactment in the grounds of Battle Abbey – 10th and 11th October 2026 – this year marking the 960th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. This epic spectacle, guaranteed to draw record crowds, brings 1066 to life with clashing swords and immersive drama.
We're not just watching this unfold – 1066 Country is at the heart of it we're working closely with the British Museum and Région Normandie to amplify our shared heritage. Expect campaigns, events, itineraries, trails and immersive experiences that will showcase every aspect of 1066 country.
