We are Climate Art. A public art platform with a mission: to break down ivory towers, bringing together community groups, artists, and researchers in our joint action against the climate crisis.
This spring, we're launching our first residency programme - A Vanished Sea (Without a Trace). We selected three multidisciplinary artists to spend three months in Rye, creating artwork in collaboration with local residents.
On 2 and 3 May, Climate Art will be hosting two open studio events! This is your opportunity to get to know the artists, attend online discussions and studio tours. And for those living nearby, it's a chance to see one of the artist's work.
JOSEPH'S CADDY WAGON
Dates: 2 – 3 May 2021
Time: All day
Location: Bridgepoint Rye, Rock Channel (via St Margaret's Terrace), Rye, TN31 7DE
Joseph Williams is an East Sussex artist with a background in architectural design. He is passionate about the potential of bamboo as a sustainable and stunning building material for the future.
Working in consultation with the groundbreaking design-led engineering firm AKT II, he will build a temporary bamboo structure in the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Responding to the local landscape, it will serve as a space for different community groups to come together.
Visit us at the Bridgepoint Creative Arts Centre on 2-3 May, where you'll have the opportunity to see an example of Joseph's past work and chat to him about his creative process.
A STUDIO SESSION WITH MO AND ALISTAIR
Date: 3 May 2021
Time: 6:00-7:00pm
Location: [virtual Zoom event] https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81175849692
Moderated by Climate Art Curator Dzmitry Suslau
Mo Langmuir is a London-based artist with a background in environmental biology. Her work strives to break down the binary between art and science through collaboration with local communities.
Alistair Debling is an interdisciplinary artist hailing from Bristol. His project will investigate Rye's rich military history as a fortified town, in tandem with its historical and contemporary energy and environmental defence infrastructure. This work will help us (re)think what defence, protection and fortification of the landscape mean in the age of climate breakdown.
On 3 May they'll be opening up their studios for a virtual tour. Mo will be sharing information about her methodologies, sampling equipment, mapping tools and sketches. Alistair will be hosting an open conversation about the themes of his project and sharing new aerial photography of the local landscape.
If you're interested in learning more about Mo's artistic process, or influencing the trajectory of Alistair's work then sign up for the zoom session: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81175849692
