Battle Abbey

This October, stand where England's future was decided at the infamous re-enactment of one of the most important events in English history. Over two action packed days, English Heritage recreate the epic clash of the Norman and Saxon armies, as over 600 soldiers take to the field. With a full festival atmosphere to enjoy, there will be lots for the family to get stuck into. All day visitors can experience have a go archery, shop at medieval traders stalls, see breathtaking falconry displays and listen to talks from noteworthy authors.

In celebration of the event, English Heritage are looking for aspiring young writers to craft a piece of historical fiction surrounding the events of the Battle of Hastings. Whatever inspires you, whether joining the invading warriors, defending the realm or reimagining 1066, they want to hear about it. Let your imagination run riot and send in your masterpiece.

The panel of judges will be looking for the most imaginative, original and exciting stories inspired by 1066. All authors entering the competition will receive free entry for themselves and one adult, and will have a chance to win fantastic prizes.  

How to enter

Entries will be judged in two categories:
Age up to 9yrs – 200 words
10yrs and above – 500 words

The deadline for sending in your story is 00:01, midnight on Sunday 1 October.  Email it with your name, age and contact details to: or by post to 1066 Story Competition, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, TN33 0AD

All entries will be placed on display at the Battle of Hastings event, 14 and 15 October in the Literary Hub.

There will be one overall winner in each category and special commendation for the following:

• Most gory
• Most imaginative
• Most unexpected ending

Medals and prizes will be presented to the winner and specially commended writers at the prize giving ceremony to be held at the Battle of Hastings event.  Free entry for the writer & one adult to the Battle of Hastings event on Saturday 14 October will be provided to all entrants.
