Hastings Castle - Myths and Legends

To the East of the castle stands an area known as The Ladies Parlour where it's believed tournaments were held. It gained its name from the fact that there was always a lady of distinction present at the events and it's said that the manifestation of a lady dressed in a shimmering white gown can still be seen on moonlit nights.

It's also said that the ghostly shape of Thomas a Beckett can be seen wandering the castle ruins. There is some conjecture over Beckett's connections to the castle, but it's thought that he was once the church's most famous Dean.

During the 1960s the ghost of a nun was caught on camera by a tourist. A World War I nurse is said to haunt the nearby Wallingers Walk and 18th century sailors said that when viewed from the sea, the ruined castle was complete in all its former glory.

The mysterious 'Whispering Dungeons' took their name from the fact that prisoners could be overheard talking by guards who were several yards away in another room. Needless to say, the dungeons are also said to be haunted.
