For fish fans a trip to the home of Hastings Fish is essential. Head for Hastings Old Town and tuck into traditional fish and chips at Maggie’s looking out over the brightly coloured fishing boats and nets, gulls crying overhead, the light dazzling the water. Or for high-class cuisine, try the tiny Rockanore Kitchen, tucked away in the heart of the net shops, or Webbe’s further up the same road. Both owner-chefs (Fods and Paul respectively) are truly passionate about Hastings fish and local produce.
Fresh fish has been landed from the Stade in Hastings Old Town for over one thousand years. Hastings has the largest beach-launched fleet in Europe and fishermen use sustainable practices such as adapting their nets and fishing patterns to the fish that are in the local area and using safe fishing methods to help maintain stocks and habitats. As a result, Hastings has one of the strongest fishing stocks in the country and is regarded internationally as an example of best practice in sustainable fishing methods among professional associations, fishing fleets and chefs.
There are three fish festivals in Hastings every year: the Midsummer Fish Fest in June, Hastings Seafood & Wine Festival in September, and the Herring Fair in November. At all of them you will find live music all weekend, a great selection of food and drink from local restaurants, street vendors and bakeries, as well as local brewers and wine makers, plus free cooking demos and children’s activities.
Wristbands are available in advance from the Tourist Information Centre or on the festival gate, for just a few pounds. Under 18s are free. A great investment for a weekend of entertainment and feasting!
