Cake Room

Take a stroll down Robertson Street in the America Ground Hastings and you’ll soon be drawn to the verdant oasis that is Cake Room.
Peek through the windows and you’ll discover a counter laden with impressive cake creations and luxury lunch items with a hot tea/coffee selection for all tastes and dietary requirements.

We spoke to owner Lauren who told us a bit more about her business and what it’s like being based in the America Ground and White Rock area of Hastings.

Tell us a bit more about your business

Cake Room is a cafe, coffee shop, brunchy bistro type of place.

We’re not a quick stop coffee shop, we do nice cakes and lunches and people like to take their time in here.
Everything is made here on site and we try to do things a little different - you’d probably never find a victoria sponge or coffee and walnut cake here, we aim to be more exciting than that and keep customers intrigued with our creations.
Cake Room is a neutral space for people to do their own thing in. We hire the space out as a venue and will shortly be pushing our schedule of evening entertainment.

Before I opened here I was doing pop up tea parties and wholesale catering for other companies, so I have a big book of recipes which my baking angel Joe and I work from here. Joe’s great at adapting our recipes for vegan and gluten free customers too.

What is it like being based in the America Ground?

When I first took the premises here I was attracted by businesses such as Wow & Flutter and the forward-thinking menu at Bullet.

I love it here but it’s not been without its struggles - as with any town there have been businesses forced to close but thankfully the empty shop fronts on Robertson Street are being reopened now and new businesses are popping up all the time. It’s a slow process! I’d like to see a couple of bigger retailers or a big gallery recognising this area for the gem that it is.
Trinity Street is really lovely with the pot plants outside the church, HiStore with Stooge’s Coffee, plus Trinity Wholefoods and Wow and Flutter.

What is your favourite thing about Hastings?

The people!
I moved here from Brighton two years ago and I was overwhelmed by how friendly everyone is here. People take the time to listen and make sure you’re alright.
I have a lovely group of friends here now.

What do you like to do in this area on your days off?

Well, days off are few and far between but I like to go to Rustico for food and Borough Wines for drinks. I buy all of my cards from Hi-Store. I have been to Wow & Flutter’s quiz at the Printworks a few times too which is great fun.

Do you have a top tip for people visiting the America Ground and White Rock area of Hastings?

Go to Borough Wines for drinks - they have a really alternative and eclectic program of events and it’s nice to have a glass of wine outside in the summer.
If the church is open go and take a look in there, too!
