The Bayeux Tapestry is an extraordinary example of Anglo-Norman art and workmanship. In addition it is chronicle, political propaganda and visual evidence of 11th-century mundane objects and way of life, all on a monumental scale.
Celebrate the story of the event that transformed England's culture and heritage, as told by those that were there at the time, and interpreted by Gale Owen-Crocker, Professor Emerita of The University of Manchester.
There will also be a chance to view 1066: A Medieval Mosaic, which will be exhibited in the Crypt of St Mary in the Castle. Comprising 3,000,000 pieces of spring steel, it holds the Guinness World Record as the largest steel mosaic. The artwork is a complete re-creation of the Bayeux Tapestry and was created over 20 years by Michael Linton. It measured 64 metres in length and weighs 450kg.
