Hastings Winkle Club Jazz & Blues Festival

This festival follows on from the successful one day event last year at the Stade Open Space.  Backed up by most of the pubs and bars in Hastings Old town, each presenting jazz, blues or funky soul each evening from Friday 2 June, plus on the main stage at Stade Open Space on Saturday 3 June from 2pm-9pm and Sunday 4 June from 10am-7pm.

The festival is free but please give generously to the collection bucket(s) on behalf of Hastings winkle Club, whose charity fund donates thousands of pounds every year.

Saturday 3 June

– gates open at 1.30pm

2pm-2.45pm   The Helen Sharpe Jazz Quartet

Helen blends some wonderful blues classics with a laid-back jazz style.

3pm-4pm        The Red Butler Blues Band

Dynamic rock/blues band Red Butler is fast making a name for itself across Britain and Europe. Audiences instantly tap into the fire and passion generated by the young band from Brighton.

4.30pm-5.30pm          Jane Reeve’s Triple Delight

Expect some jazz favourites and some super-close harmonies!

6pm-7pm        The Herbie Flowers & Mike Hatchard Band

Herbie Flowers is one of Britain’s most accomplished session musicians!  He has worked with many, many leading artists and will tell you a few stories about his amazing career in music. 

Mike Hatchard has had an extraordinarily diverse career as a musician. He began as the pianist for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and subsequently toured America as Cleo Laine’s accompanist as a member of the John Dankworth Quintet and became Matt Monro’s youngest ever musical director.

He often works with Herbie Flowers and on this occasion they share the stage with their band.

7.30pm – 9pm             Liane Carroll Band

Liane Carroll topping the bill for Saturday night.  Raised in Hastings, she has dedicated her life to her art. The ultimate Jazz and Soul singer, pianist and entertainer, she always, always delivers!

Sunday 4 June

– gates open at 10am

10.30am – Jazz Breakfast anyone? Great selection of breakfast baps, cooked on site.  Sit back and enjoy music with The Invicta Jazz Orchestra.

This orchestra plays regularly at festivals in Faversham, Maidstone, Whitstable, Hastings and Tonbridge as well as many concerts on bandstands at other venues. IJO has played in The Marlborough Jazz festival and will go on tour this year to Arras in France. IJO plays a mix of jazz styles: funk, latin, smooth, fun standards: anything but Dixieland!

2pm-2.45pm – Hexagonal

The finest Jazz Sextet in the country with Jason Yarde; Greg Heath; James McMillan; Pianist John Donaldson; Bassist Simon Thorpe and Drummer Tristan Banks

3pm-4pm        The Greg Coulson Blues Band (ex Selector)

Just 25 years old, Greg is already an accomplished and highly respected musician with a track record including lengthy spells in the legendary Two Tone/Ska Band The Selecter and in the West End as a lead in Close to You: Bacharach Reimagined.

Greg has his own special, fiery, impassioned brand of Rhythm & Blues, putting his own stamp on the music of the greats who inspire him – Ray Charles, Booker T, Taj Mahal and more. Greg breathes new life into what is often considered Vintage music, reminding people of all ages of why this music once dominated the world.

4.30pm – 6pm – The Tony O’Malley Band (Arrival – Kokomo and ex-10cc)

Tony returns to Hastings with his great band and no doubt some surprises!

6.30pm -7pm  The Tom Fitzpatrick Band

The Tom Fitzpatrick Band have created one of the most versatile and engaging acts to hit the music scene.  You are gonna love their young & hip style of Jazz, Swing and Big Band tunes!
