Belonging Bandstand is Morag Myerscough’s first-ever mobile installation: a bright, bold, touring bandstand programmed in conjunction with communities across Sussex.
The subject of belonging has intrigued Myerscough for many years and bandstands bring people together with the use of music and performance.
The crown of the bandstand is adorned with placards created from workshops that Myerscough ran in early 2018 with people from Sussex, including young people from Bexhill and Hastings.
The project is born out of the kinship Myerscough feels with the work of 1960s Los Angeles artist Corita Kent, and accompanies the exhibition Corita Kent: Get With The Action (5 May – 14 October 2018 at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft).
Myerscough is internationally renowned for her dazzling, colourful typographical designs, and discovered a kindred spirit in Corita’s work and spirit:
“I feel a deep connection to Corita’s approach as she is about being REAL. Corita taught her students how to keep ‘their eyes and minds open’ which is so essential to continue doing relevant work at any age, that we can connect to the world around us and make a difference.”
