About

The cellar under Blackfriars' Barn dates from the early 14th century. The site was used as a barn in the 19th century but, demolition of the barn and subsequent fire in the early 20th century revealed that it was constructed around the ruins of a larger and more significant building. In preparation for opening in 2013, medieval etchings of national importance were discovered: they depict a fleet of at least twelve ships. The site is owned and managed by the National Trust.

The ruin of Blackfriars Barn lies on the west side of Rectory Lane (the A259 trunk road from Hastings to Rye) on the western aspect of the Town, adjacent to the Cricket field and opposite to Wesley's Methodist Chapel. It is owned and managed by the National Trust. Its cellar is an impressive medieval space remarkable for its graffiti.
