About

Explore the political origins, civic ambitions, design, materials, technologies and structure of one of the greatest Modernist buildings of the 20th Century.

In 1924 the 9th Earl De La Warr became the first hereditary peer to join the Labour Party. As Mayor of Bexhill-on-Sea from 1932 – 1934 he paved the way for an international competition to design a new Pavilion as an expression of a specifically social and moral agenda – a people's palace – with a brief that lent itself to the new Modernist style.

Join our tour guides to learn more about the Earl, his family, their ambitions for the prosperity and culture of the town and the fascinating story of the De La Warr Pavilion.
