50 Years a Museum

During 2017 Pevensey has another important Norman commemoration. In March 1067 William the Conqueror returned to where he had successfully landed six months before in order to hold a great victory gathering where he could pay off his warriors who wished to return with him to Normandy. He took with him important English hostages including the Archbishop of Canterbury and Prince Edgar to ensure the tranquillity of his new kingdom while away!  His ships awaited in Pevensey Harbour adorned appropriately in a spirit of joy and triumph. To compliment a special display ‘Norman Sussex after 1066’ Pevensey Courthouse Museum have commissioned  a permanent pictorial recreation of this amazing event by the renowned Sussex based artist Andy Gammon who is noted for his historical graphic work.

Also the Court House is celebrating fifty years open as a Museum subtitled ‘with a head tucked underneath his arm’ the photo that shows our famous Beadle about to be installed in the Court Room.

The source for William’s Pevensey return is William of Poitiers – his own chronicler writing probably soon after 1070. There is a brief mention in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle.
