1066 Country - Best of Britain

Best of Britain - Historic Coast and Countryside

Hastings & 1066 Country is home to some of East Sussex’s finest coast and countryside together with several major historic sites including the field on which the Battle of Hastings was fought.

The increasingly cosmopolitan Hastings itself is home to Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet with a world class Marine Stewardship Council-certified fishery that’s celebrated every year in the town’s Seafood and Wine Festival.

Bexhill is home to the iconic De La Warr Pavilion, which can be found on the charming seafront. Rural 1066 Country is perfect for both intrepid ramblers and casual walkers with everything from the moated wonders of Bodiam Castle and Herstmonceux Castle to Rudyard Kipling’s former home Batemans and exquisite gardens at Great Dixter; Pashley Manor and Merriments.

Rye home of Henry James, offers a spectacular nature reserve, museums and art galleries. Camber is Sussex’s only sand dune system.  Pevensey has a castle that was once a Roman Fort and a unique courthouse museum.  Throughout Hastings & 1066 Country there is a full, year-round events programme with festivals and celebrations for all seasons.

1066 Country is served by the A21 from London and the A259 coastal road; with regular direct train services from London and Gatwick Airport being close by.
