Twelfth Night - Dress Rehearsal

Twelfth night - dress rehearsal - dukes theatre - rye creative centre

Join The Duke's Theatre Company's dress rehearsal of Twelfth Night.

Whether you’re an audience member in 2023 or back in 1602, you could be forgiven for thinking that Twelfth Night was going to be the darkest of tragedies: what could be more nightmarish than to lose your twin sibling in a furious storm at sea and to think they'd died?

In fact, a romantic comedy unfolds with a madcap farce at its heart. The broadest of broad humour (poor Malvolio tricked into absurdity) mixes with moments of unbearable pathos (listen out for Sir Anthony Aguecheek's wistful "I was adored once too".).

We don't want to give any more away, even though we're so excited to be presenting our new production of Twelfth Night that we want to tell you everything. We won't though: suffice to say it all works out in the end, in a way that only Shakespeare would carry off.

What can you expect from a Duke's Theatre Company performance? The full text in all its glory; innovative production design to support the unparalleled energy of our wonderful cast; original music so that Shakespeare's songs are heard in a whole new way - and all we ask is that you come prepared for a wonderful time.

Twelfth Night was first performed in 1602. Four hundred and twenty-one years on, we're proud and privileged to bring this extraordinary play to you.

CAFÉ BAZAR

Olivia Boen soprano
Sholto Kynoch piano

The Café Bazar in Salzburg was an extraordinary meeting place of composers and writers in the 1920s and was the launchpad for the International Society of Contemporary Music one hundred years ago. Today's programme celebrates some of the most important figures from the early days of the ISCM, including Debussy, Strauss, Ethel Smyth, Manuel de Falla and others.

Bringing this glorious music to life is the soprano Olivia Boen, praised for her “full-bodied, sparkling tone” (ClevelandClassical.com). Olivia is a recent graduate of the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This past season, she was a member of the Wigmore Hall French Song Exchange led by Dame Felicity Lott and François le Roux, covered Donna Anna at Nevill Holt Opera, and premiered at the London Song Festival in a recital of unknown works by Ivor Gurney. She was also a finalist in the 2021 Gold Medal Prize at the Guildhall School hosted by the Barbican.

The Bridgepoint Ensemble

The Bridgepoint Ensemble, a collection of some of the finest instrumentalists in the country, returns to Rye with an evening of gorgeous music for string sextet. The opening work is an early composition by Arnold Schoenberg, his Verklärte Nacht, or Transfigured Night. This luscious score is a setting of a poem that tells the story of two young lovers, walking through a bare, cold wood in the moonlight. The poem describes how the woman shares a terrible secret with her companion.

The second half of the concert features one of the great masterpieces of chamber music repertoire by Tchaikovsky- his Souvenir de Florence, or memories of a happy time for the Russian master, penned as it was after returning from a trip to Florence.

Performers:

Violins: Ruth Rogers and Nicky Sweeney
Violas: Fiona Bonds and Becky Low
Cellos: Hannah Sloane and Katherine Jenkinson

Programme:

Schoenberg - Verklӓrte Nacht
