Christmas tree buyers guide

If you're undecided as to what type of Ctree to buy, then read our brief guide to the types of Christmas trees you'll find throughout 1066 Country:

Norway Spruce (picea abies)

Needles - light to dark green in colour.
The traditional Christmas tree, can be sheared (trimmed) to make an attractive dense bushy tree.  This is the best selling tree and provided it is freshly cut or dug in December and supplied with plenty of water whilst in the house should hold its needles well into the New Year.

Serbian Spruce (picea omorika)

Needles - green with silver underside with a soft texture.
A narrow more sparsely branched tree and the needles tend to drop when kept indoors.

Blue Spruce (picea pungens glauca)

Needles - can be an attractive silver blue.
Good needle retention, though they can be very sharp so not good with young children or pets in the house.

Scots Pine (pinus sylvestris)

Needles - large blue coloured.
This popular tree can be very dense when sheared but perhaps the best tree for needle retention.

How to look after your tree:

  • Ensure that you buy a fresh tree, from one of the suppliers named below
  • If you are not going to take the tree into your house immediately, keep it in a cool, dry, sheltered place
  • If possible, place the tree in a bucket of water
  • Just before you take the Christmas tree in the house, saw off the bottom 1" (3cm) of the trunk. Once inside the house, try and position your Christmas tree away from any heat sources such as radiators.
  • Place the tree in a specially designed Christmas tree stand - either a Hydro or a Cinco stand, with plain water
  • Keep the Christmas tree stand topped up with water, it may need 2 to 3 pints (1 to 2 litres) of water per day, depending on its size and how warm your house is - this is very important as once the water level drops below the trunk, sap will re-seal the bark within a few hours and the tree will be unable to absorbe any more water
