Jack-in-the-Green

Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green Festival is now in its twenty sixth year.  Prepare to be amazed and delighted by the climatic May Day procession with music, dance and colour; at one of Britain's most spectacular and bizarre events.

These were the highlights of the 2009 festival:

Friday 01 May

8.00pm onwards: music in the Old Town at The Stag pub in All Saints Street, The First in Last Out pub in the High Street and many others.
8.30pm - Moveable Feast at St Mary in the Castle, Pelham Crescent.  Admission £2.

Saturday 02 May

From 12.30pm to 5pm: Morris Dancing throughout the town.
8.00pm: Chalktown, the big Ceilidh at St Mary in the Castle, Pelham Crescent.  Admission £8 adults; £3 children 8.00pm: The Big Squeeze at The White Rock Hotel.  Free admission.

Sunday 03 May

10.00am: Celebration Church Service at St Clements Church, Swan Terrace, Hastings
1.00pm: Dancing at The White Rock Hotel - Morris teams dance on the prom opposite the hotel.
1.30pm: The Queen of the May at the Castle.  The Hastings May Queen will be officially crowned
4.00pm: The Copper Family at the Stables Theatre, the Bourne, Hastings.  Admission £5.
8.00pm: BBC Folk Awards Winner Chris Wood with support from Rattlebag, at the Stables Theatre, The Bourne.  Tickets £8 adults.
8.00pm: The Sugar Loaf Band at St Mary in the Castle, Pelham Crescent.  Tickets £8 adults; £3 children

Monday 04 May

9.45am: The Gathering - everyone gathers at the Net Huts in Rock a Nore Road.  The greening begins.
10.15am: Jack is released from the Fishermen's Museum in Rock-a-Nore Road and the procession begins.
12.30pm: Jack arrives at the Castle.
12.45pm: The Dancing begins.
3.30pm: Jack is symbolically slain and the Spirit of Summer is set free for another year.
