May Day Procession

In 2009 the Festival begins on 1 May and continues over the weekend (the 2008 programme is still available on the organisers' website) with the climactic May Day procession being by far the most popular event.

The red trail on this map shows the route Jack takes, dancing his way to another untimely death on Monday 4 May 2009!

9.00am The Morris sides, the Bogies, the Sweeps and a host of other characters gather at the Net Huts in Rock-a-nore Road.

10.00am The Jack is released and the procession begins!

11.15am - 12 midday The Procession proceeds up All Saints Street, then down the High Street to George Street where the Procession pauses for dancing and refreshments.

The Procession proceeds down to the Seafront, along to Wellington Square, up Castle Hill Road and across to the castle.

12.30pm The Jack arrives in Hastings Castle.

12.45pm Morris Dancing and a Craft Fair on Ladies Parlour.

3.30pm The Jack is slain and the spirit of the Summer is released for another year.
