1066 Country goes to Travel! The Workshop: Brussels - 11 October 2008

Four leading countries for group short breaks (Great Britain, France, The Netherlands and Luxemburg) recently took part in the 9th edition of Travel! The Workshop in Brussels.  This unique one day event enables suppliers to meet with representatives from the travel trade and associations world and attracted over 500 visitors, consisting of press, trade, group organisers, teachers and cultural associations.  VisitBritain's presence was supported by 12 partners who included 1066 Country, English Heritage, Visit Kent and Canterbury Cathedral.

1066 Country shared the stand with P&O Ferries and there was a constant stream of visitors to the stand with genuine interest shown in the1066 Country attractions.  The marketing team in Hastings had worked hard to produce the 2009 Group Travel Guide in time for this event and it proved to be the right decision.  We were one of few destinations to provide the very latest information and every single copy disappeared into the hands of people eager to make their plans for next season.  A long list of addresses was also taken to send out more from the UK.

1066 Country welcomes Belgian press trip

Journalists outside Jeake's House

At the invitation of the 1066 Country Marketing team, five Belgian travel journalists spent the weekend of 18 October visiting Battle, Hastings and Rye.

The group spent their two nights at Jeake's House in Rye.  They sampled a wide variety of local produce during the time they spent in the area, which included a tour of Carr Taylor vineyard.  Among the sites of interest visited were Bodiam Castle, Yesterday's World in Battle and Smugglers' Adventure in Hastings.  Tours of the three towns introduced the journalists to this beautiful area so close to Belgium.

On Saturday evening all five journalists watched, and then participated in, the Hastings Bonfire procession.  Paul de Groeve, writing for Belgium's biggest daily newspaper, Het Laatste Nieuws, said: "The programme was fantastic, with a lot of variation, a very nice hotel and great meals."

1066 Country Marketing organises many press visits promoting the area throughout the year.  A couple of the journalists are already planning to return to write articles based on the gardens, houses and antiques in the area.

Rye's the prize

Ostend Competition winners

A Belgian couple sampled the delights of Rye first hand after winning a two-night stay at a tourism show.  Jan Leniere and Martine Desmasdryl won the 1066 Country and Norfolkline competition during a visit to Ostend Voor Ankur in Belgium, an exhibition promoting overseas holidays with a maritime theme.

The couple, who came over for a weekend in October, stayed at Oaklands Bed and Breakfast, Udimore Road, Rye, right in the middle of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on the outskirts of Rye.

Owners, Tony and Diane Hayes, gave the couple a warm welcome and plenty of tips on what to see and where to go including Camber Castle and Rye Nature Reserves.

Jan and Martine have already made plans to come back next year and Jan said: "You need at least five days, two for Rye alone."
